Sigmund Werner Paul Jähn (Morgenröthe-Rautenkranz, February 13, 1937) was the first German cosmonaut, in addition to the first German, both from the East and the West – at that time Germany was divided in two States- in traveling to space.
He traveled to space on August 26, 1978 in the Soyuz 31 mission, within the framework of the Intercosmos program of the Soviet Union.
Sigmund Jahn’s Biography
Between 1943 and 1951 he was educated in his hometown. After school he studied to be a printer. In 1955 he joined the air force of the German Democratic Republic (the Luftstreitkräfte der NVA), where he became a military pilot. Between 1966 and 1970 he studied at the Yuri Gagarin Military Air Academy in the city of Monino, in the USSR, and worked in the administration of the air force of the GDR, was responsible for experimental education and aviation security.
