Shirley Mae Jones (March 31, 1934), Charleroi, Pennsylvania, United States), is an American singer, actress, film and television actress. Awarded the Oscar for her performance in the movie Elmer Gantry (1960). Remembered for his participation in musical films and television series.

Shirley Jones’s Biography

His parents named him Shirley after the famous actress and singer of the children Shirley Temple. When he was six years old he began to sing and at the age of twelve he took singing lessons. Her illusion at that time was to become a great singer. When he finished his education in 1954, he traveled to New York to undergo a test before the casting director of a major musical company. She made a good impression and was hired for the South Pacific play that was performed on Broadway.

A year later, in 1955, he received an offer to participate in the Oklahoma musical. Filming lasted a full year and once completed he returned to Broadway, where he starred in the theatrical version of Oklahoma. Then he appeared in his second film, Carousel, and was definitely oriented towards the cinema. However, the musicals were in rapid decline, so she was faced with the need to be an actress, unable to use the appeal of singing. The first roles he played, he did not consider them very satisfactory, since his characters were sweet and caramelized. While waiting to receive more interesting offers he worked in some movies and mini-television series.

In 1960, he had his chance with the film Elmer Gantry, by Richard Brooks, in which he made a brilliant performance as a vengeful prostitute, along with an equally brilliant Burt Lancaster. For her role she received an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress, a Golden Laurel Award, and a National Board of Review Award. However, the audience wanted to see a nice and nice Shirley Jones in the movies, so her next film was The Music Man, with Robert Preston, who had a great success as well as Eddie’s father’s courtship, with Glenn Ford.

From the 1960s, he devoted himself for many years almost exclusively to television, where he made films and mini-series, as well as some series. The popularity that had reached in the cinema maintained it in television, means in which she was an actress appreciated during all the time in which it appeared. Within this medium she gained great popularity within the series The Partridge Family (1970-1974), where she played the role of mother of a family that was at the same time a pop music group where the singer David Cassidy (his stepson in real life), which would jump to fame as an adolescent idol as a result of this series.

With the turn of the century, and being older, she has returned to the cinema and has shot several films, resuming her film career as if she had not abandoned her in almost 20 years.
