Shavarsh “Shavo” Odadjian (in Armenian: Շավո Օդադջյան) (Yerevan, Armenia, April 22, 1974), is an Armenian-American musician, known for being the bassist of the band System of a Down.
Odadjian was born in Yerevan, SSR of Armenia and moved to California at an early age, where he was raised largely by his grandmother.
He studied at the Rose and Alex Pilibos Armenian School in Los Angeles, an Armenian school, where his future groupmates Serj Tankian and Daron Malakian also studied, although in different courses because of the difference in ages. He grew up under the influence of punk rock and heavy metal bands such as Dead Kennedys, Kiss, Black Sabbath, AC / DC, or Iron Maiden, among others, which created a great influence on his musical development of the future.

Apart from working in a bank, he also started working as a manager and then as a bassist in 1993 with the band Soil, which included Malakian, Tankian and other friends, after meeting them in a recording studio. In 1995 Shavo, together with Tankian and Malakian, decided to form the band System of a Down. The band would originally be called Victims of a Down, name of a poem written by Daron Malakian, but Odajian changed Victims for System. The band has stated that they also changed the word “Victims” to “System” so that their CDs were placed in stores with their favorite band, Slayer.
Odadjian plays bass in System of a Down, and he also sings live choirs. His usual style of playing bass is with a plectrum, although he has also been seen playing with his fingers during certain songs. Odadjian has also written several System of a Down songs, including “Toxicity”, “Sugar”, “Jet-Pilot”, “Bounce”, “Mind”, “Dreaming”, and “U Fig”. He has directed most of the band’s music videos, and is responsible for set design and lighting for each of his live performances.
