Shamus Culhane’s Biography

He has worked for numerous animation studios, including Fleischer Studios, Ub Iwerks, Walt Disney Productions and Walter Lantz Studio. While at Disney, he was one of the main animators of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, working on one of the most famous scenes in the film: the animation of the dwarves marching to the rhythm of the song “Heigh-Ho”. Culhane completed the scene after six months of work with his assistants.

Later, Culhane worked as a director for Lantz, where he made the 1994 classic of the Crazy Bird, The Barber of Seville. In the late 1940s, he founded Shamus Culhane Productions, one of the first companies to create animated commercials for television.

Shamus Culhane Productions was closed in the 60s, at this time Culhane became the head of the successor of Fleischer Studios, Famous Studios. He left the studio in 1967.

Culhane wrote two books on animation: the guide text Animation from Script to Screen, and his autobiography Talking Animals and Other People. Because Culhane worked for a large number of animation studios, his autobiography provides a broad description of the American animation industry.
