Sergio Oliva’s Biography

Sergio Oliva was born on July 4, 1941 in Pinar del Río, Cuba, and was a member of Cuba’s weightlifting team. While the Cuban team was in Jamaica preparing for the Central American Games, Sergio thought that this was not the sport that had to be dedicated and moved to the US. UU to devote himself to bodybuilding, with the prestige of being recognized as one of the ten best weight lifters in the world [appointment & nbsp; required]. To stay he worked in Miami repairing televisions, and then he would move to Chicago, where he started working as a police officer, and start competing in weightlifting while molding a physicist that many have defined as perfect. Sergio started his bodybuilding journey at the AAU, where he was quick to stand out and where the judges saw him, not without reason, as a serious contender to win the most prestigious tournament in the world.

Tired of various problems with AAU, Sergio began to process his entry to the IFBB where a few months after being accepted, he won the Mr. Mundo IFBB in 1966. Sergio began to be very interested in the Joe Tournament Weider, Mr. Olympia, who at that time dominated Larry Scott.

After that, and with his muscles very in tune, well proportioned and with a mass out of the ordinary, Sergio began to see the Olympia as something he could win if he kept doing things as well as he had done so far. Clearly, he saw himself with possibilities to rise up with him. Before going for the Olympia, Sergio won the IFBB Mr. Universe in 1967.

Mr. Olympia did not take long to arrive and he conquered it during the years 1967, 1968 and 1969, in the latter defeating the great Arnold Schwarzenegger, who would “avenge” a year later snatching it in 1970.

After Arnold took away Olympia in that year, Sergio left the IFBB and started his career in other federations (WBBG and WABBA).

At 43 years old, in 1984, and after winning enough trophies in these two federations, he decided to return to IFBB and Olympia (where many believe he made a memorable return), where he finished eighth in 1984 and again eighth in ’85. , which meant that Sergio hung the gym gloves.

Before making this decision he tried his luck at the cinema, where he made two films that went very unnoticed and where Sergio saw that it was time to make a decision: Leave professional bodybuilding.

In 1986 his wife Arleen Garrett tried to end his life by shooting him five times with a .38 caliber in the abdomen. He went unpunished.
