Sergei Lukiánenko was born in Karatau, Kazakhstan, which was then part of the Soviet Union. His parents were Russian-Ukrainians. After completing his primary education he moved to Alma-Ata, where he studied at the Medical Institute of Alma-Ata in 1986 as a therapist. After graduation in 1992 he started working in one of Alma-Ata’s hospitals, specializing in child psychiatry, but he soon left the work practice, as the low salaries of Soviet doctors collapsed completely with the fall of the Soviet Union , so that with his medical salary he was unable to support a family. He had started writing when he was a student and resumed his literary work to earn money. During this time he had become an active member of Russian fans of literature and science fiction, attending conventions and seminars throughout the Soviet Union.

It was one of the toughest periods in Serguéi’s life, as his family had to make an effort to get ahead economically. Sergei Lukiánenko met his future wife Sonia in the early 1990s, while still in college. He married her that same year. She studied psychology and graduated from the state university Kazakhstan. Now he has a graduate degree in child psychology and taught psychology at the Russian State University for Humanities until 2003. His first son Artemi Lukiánenko was born in February 2004. His second son Daniil was born on November 23, 2007.
The Lukiánenko couple has raised mice as pets: the first was called Stremítelni (Rapid) and the next couple were Mulder and Scully (a tribute to the X-Files series).
