His early comics were inspired by the Charles Chaplin films he saw while working as a projectionist in a cinema. Richard Felton Outcault encouraged him to send his drawings to the press, and in 1916 he published his first Charlie Chaplin’s Comic Capers at the Chicago Herald. Two years later, in 1918, Segar moved to the Chicago Evening American, for which he created his series Looping the Loop.

His work attracted the attention of Arthur Brisbane, head of the King Features Syndicate, owned by tycoon William Randolph Hearst. Recruited for the agency, he began publishing the Timble Theater series in the New York Journal. In 1929 he created Popeye as a secondary character in this strip, but the sailor quickly gained prominence to the point of becoming one of the best known comic characters of all time.

For the King Features Syndicate, in parallel with Timble Theater, he created the strip The Five-Fifteen (1920), which in 1926 changed its name to Sappo. He died of leukemia on October 13, 1938 in Santa Monica.
