He was the fourth president and chief executive officer (CEO) of Nintendo. He was driven by the idea that videogames should be aimed at a wider audience, instead of promoting the design of increasingly high-level hardware.
Iwata showed interest in video games as a young man and created his first simple video game while still in high school. Subsequently he graduated in computer science at the Technological Institute of Tokyo. In 1980, while still in college, he started working as a videogame developer at HAL Laboratory; in his first years in this company he worked as a programmer in collaborative projects with Nintendo, producing his first commercial videogame in 1983. He participated in the development of games such as EarthBound and the Kirby series. After a failure and almost bankruptcy, Iwata became the president of HAL Laboratory in 1993, helping the company achieve financial stability after a period of losses.
