According to an official four-volume biography, written by the devotee Narayana Kasturi, according to conversations with Sai Baba himself, he said that shortly after birth they found a cobra in the sheets of his crib. This would have shown his parents that he was Ananta Shesha – the one lying on the snake Shesha – an avatar of the god Vishnu.

The writer Arnold Schulman, author of the Baba biography, published in 1971, exhibits another version of this story, based on the words of Rayu’s sister, who declared that the snake was seen several hours later, outside the home.

Schulman wrote that “for every episode of Baba’s childhood, there are countless versions” and that it was not possible to separate the real facts from the myths.

According to Kasturi, and Sathya Sai Baba himself, when he was 8 years old, he liked to compose Bhajans.

At eight & nbsp; years, he started elementary school; Sathia Narayana Rayu appears in the school registry of Bukkapatnam. Then he entered high school in Uravakonda. On March 8, 1940, at 14 years of age, Sathia Narayana Rayu began to show strange behavior, as if she had been stung by a scorpion. He lost consciousness, and in recovering it he had changed his behavior in such a way that his parents worried: he did not want to eat, he stayed in silence for a long time, he recited ancient slokas or he talked about the sacred Hindu scriptures. At the request of his family, Sai Baba returned to the secondary school in Uravakonda in June. In May 1940 the reincarnation of the Muslim fakir and Hindu saint Sai Baba of Shirdi (c. & Nbsp; 1838-1918) was proclaimed, and consequently he adopted the name Sai Baba.

According to Kasturi, on October 20, 1940, at the age of 14 years old, Satia Narayana Rayu threw down her books and announced: “My devotees are calling me.have my job. ” Then he spent the next three days under a tree in the garden of an official inspector (government official) and many people gathered around him. Baba taught them to sing bhajans that praised various Hindu gods, and himself. From that moment Sai Baba claimed to be the avatar for our era, that is, a divine incarnation sent to Earth to bring about spiritual renewal. Since then he has persistently maintained this position.

In 1944 a mandir for the followers of Sathya Sai Baba was built near the village and is called the “old mandir” now. The construction of Prashanthi Nilayam, the current ashram, began in 1948.

In 1958, Sanathana Sarathi, the official magazine of the followers of Sai Baba, was inaugurated.

At the end of the sixties, Western spiritual seekers began to be attracted to him and he became enormously popular among Western spiritual seekers.

Baba has traveled alone once from India to visit the dictator Idi Amin in Uganda in 1968.

Sathya Sai Baba had two brothers, an older brother (the late Seshama Rayu) and a younger brother, the late R. V. Yanaki Ramaiah.

On March 28, 2011, he was admitted to the Sri Sathya Sai Institute of Medicine, in the town of Puttaparti, suffering from pneumonia. A pacemaker was placed to regulate coronary activity.
