Sarah Churchill’s Biography

Sarah Churchill.

Sarah Jennings was born in Holywell, Hertfordshire, England in 1660, daughter of Richard Jennings and Frances Thornhurst. His friendship with the queen began after 1673, when she and her sister Frances joined the staff of the house of the Duke of York (later James II) and became friends with their youngest daughter; Ana was a few years younger than Sarah. They were called with affectionate nicknames, being Sarah “Mrs Freeman” and Ana “Mrs Morley”.

On October 1, 1678, Sarah married John Churchill, later converted into Duke of Marlborough, making a dazzling couple. Although he had supported Jacobo, he was also instrumental in the arrival of William of Orange to the British throne.

On the occasion of Anna’s accession to the throne, Sarah obtained a position in court, exerting great personal and political influence, deteriorating the relationship between the queen and Sarah when Abigail Masham, Sarah’s cousin, entered the house of Ana. In 1711, both Sarah and her husband lost the royal favor. The death of Ana in 1714 restored his fortune, but the Duke died in 1722, without finishing the construction of the Blenheim Palace, task that corresponded to Sarah, not without often discussing with the architect, Sir John Vanbrugh.
