Sara Garcia Hidalgo (Orizaba, Veracruz, September 8, 1895-Mexico City, November 21, 1980) was a Mexican actress by birth, of Andalusian parents from Spain. Known as the granny of Mexican cinema for frequently interpreting a severe but loving grandmother. It belonged to the Golden Age of Mexican Cinema.
At the age of 45 he took his teeth, 14 pieces of a milestone !, to play a grandmother in the film “There in the Tropics” (1940); his character was so successful that from then on he continued to play old ladies. Later, he shared credits with well-known national film actors, among them: Cantinflas, Jorge Negrete, Pedro Infante, Joaquín Pardavé and Germán Valdés “Tin Tan”. Apart from her film career, Sara García also set the standard in Mexican radio and television.
Sara García Hidalgo was born on September 8, 1895, (other sources speak of 1896) in Orizaba, Veracruz, being the eleventh daughter of: Isidoro García Ruiz and Felipa Hidalgo Rodríguez, two Spaniards from Andalusia; she was the only surviving daughter, because the first 10 had died.
Early in 1900, Sara became infected with murine typhus and infected her mother, who died months later. Her good behavior and excellent grades allowed her to continue in school and even become the substitute for the drawing teacher, thanks to her great artistic sensitivity and penchant for painting.
