From the age of eight he studied at the School of Fine Arts where he formally began his preparation as a draftsman and painter. At age 13 his family sent him to Paris through a student exchange program. Returning to Valencia, after attending night classes at the School of Fine Arts and Crafts of Burjasot, Santiago Calatrava began in 1969 the career of Architecture at the Polytechnic University of Valencia, where he graduated in 1974 and did a postgraduate course in urbanism, being a disciple of the eminent Cuenca architect Juan Carlos Jiménez. Then, Calatrava, who was interested in the great works of classical masters and wished to expand his training, moved in 1975 to Zurich, where he studied civil engineering for four years at the Federal Institute of Technology (ETHZ, by its initials in German) in which he graduated with a PhD in Technical Sciences with the thesis on the folding of structures and also exercised the teaching activity in 1979.

He was awarded the National Architecture Prize of the Ministry of Housing for the year 2005 for his long and prestigious professional career.

Works and projects

After finishing his studies, he worked as an assistant professor at the Federal Institute of Technology, where he began accepting small assignments and also participating in competitions for new projects. In 1983 he was awarded his first work of some importance, the Stadelhofen Railway Station, located near the center of Zurich where he had also established his office. The following year, Calatrava designed the Bac de Roda bridge in Barcelona, ​​which was the first that began to give it some international recognition. This would be followed by the bridge Lusitania de Mérida (1991), the Alamillo de Sevilla (1992) and the bridge of 9 October in Valencia (1995).

In 1989 Calatrava opened his second office in Paris, while he was working on the project of the Lyon Airport Railway Station called Lyon-Saint-Exupéry TGV Station. Two years later he created his third office, this time in Valencia, where he worked on a large project, the City of Arts and Sciences .

In 1992, Calatrava signs the communications tower of Montjuic (Barcelona) and one of the bridges of the Universal Exposition of Seville, the Puente del Alamillo, which links the capital of Seville and the neighboring town of Camas.
