Samuel David Bayer (February 17, 1965) is an American director of advertising, music videos and films. He is known for directing the musical video of Nirvana’s “Smells Like Teen Spirit”, all the music videos of the Green Day album American Idiot, a couple of videos of The Strokes and the video of What Goes Around … / … Comes Around by Justin Timberlake. He became a remarkable director during the era of alternative rock and is known for producing unsightly videos.
Bayer was born in Syracuse. He graduated from the School of Visual Arts in New York in 1987 with a degree in Fine Arts. In 1991 he moved to Los Angeles and became a popular director during the era of alternative rock. He has directed videos for The Strokes, Nirvana, Hole and Green Day. Bayer stated that the reason he decided to direct “Smells Like Teen Spirit” was because his camera tests were so bad, and Bayer won the MTV Video Music Award for best direction in 2005 and 2007.
Several of Bayer’s advertisements have won the Clio prize. His clients include Coca-Cola, Toyota, Intel, Cadillac, Acura, Nissan, Mercedes-Benz, Pepsi Cola, Lincoln Aviator, Sony, United States Navy and Jeep. His Nike commercial won the award for best management of the Association of Independent Commercial Producers in 1997.
New Line Cinema and Platinum Dunes chose Bayer to carry out the remake of A Nightmare on Elm Street, announcing that this would be their only film in the series in March 2010. He stated that his next project would be the original movie Fiasco Heights or an adaptation of a comic.
