Sammo_Hung’s Biography

Sammo started his boy training at the Beijing Opera School of the “Seven Little Fortunes” of the teacher Yu Jim Yuen under the stage name of Yuen Chu along with other children like Yuen Biao, Yuen Wah, Yuen Kwai (Corey Yuen) and Yuen Lu (Jackie Chan). Among the children, a strong friendship was established that would last for many years.

Soon they began to work in small roles in the cinema. Sammo officially debuted in the middle at the age of 9 in the film Education of Love (1961) by Chung Kai Man and during the decade of the 60s he worked in small children’s roles and as an extra in several films, in which little by little he was choosing towards the profession of action specialist. He soon attracted the attention of renowned action choreographer Han Ying Chieh, who introduced him to his team as a personal assistant, working on several films by producer Shaw Bros. and later Golden Harvest.

After 10 years acquiring reputation as an action director, Sammo decided to star, write and direct his own projects, debuting with The Iron Fisted Monk in 1977. At this same time he also created his own team of specialists, Sammo Hung Stuntmen’s Association (Hung Ga Ban) where some stars of the action cinema of the following decade were forged. The success at the box office of his first films, essentially comedies of martial arts, strengthened Hung in the field of production, participating in the founding of several film producers as Gar Bo Films with Karl Maka and Bo Ho Films, with whom also he produced cinematographic vehicles for his protected Lam Ching Ying or Chin Kar Lok. The most successful franchise of these films was the saga of The Lord of the Vampires (started in 1985) based on the novels of Huang Ying. In this same decade Hung carried out a series of action comedies with his friends Jackie Chan, Yuen Biao and Yuen Wah that gave him great popularity in the West.

In 1995 he married the martial arts actress Joyce “Mina” Godenzi with whom he had collaborated in several films. In 1998 he starred in the American action series Martial Law, which gave him great popularity around the world. His sons Timmy Hung and Jimmy Hung are also actors. When he moved to Hollywood his wife became Jehovah’s Witnesses.
