Sahagún is a municipality and Spanish village located in the southeast of the province of León, in the northwestern zone of the autonomous community of Castilla y León. Located between the Cea and Valderaduey rivers, it is located in the Tierra de Sahagún region, which it shares with other bordering municipalities such as Cea, Grajal de Campos or Calzada del Coto. It is also the head of the judicial party.

Located in the fertile valleys of the River Cea and Valderaduey, it was born in the shadow of a sanctuary dedicated to the martyrs Facundo and Primitivo and was consolidated in the 11th century with the arrival of the Cluny Order and the granting of the charter to the Villa by King Alfonso VI of León. During his reign Sahagún gained in importance with the impulse given to the Jacobean route and the introduction into the peninsula of the cluniacenses rites and uses against the Visigoths, which led to increased trade and extended the influence of the town over a large area geographical. After maintaining its importance during the Middle Ages, the decline of the town was progressive, accentuating it by the confiscation of Mendizábal. In 1931 it was the second Spanish town, after Éibar, to proclaim the Second Republic.

Its historical and monumental heritage, as well as various celebrations that take place throughout the year, among which highlights Holy Week, make it a destination for national and international tourism. Among its most representative monuments are the Church of San Lorenzo, the Church of San Tirso, the Shrine of the Pilgrim Mother and the ruins of the Royal Monastery of San Benito, all of them declared of Cultural Interest.

This cultural importance is accentuated as a place of passage on the Camino de Santiago and for belonging to the Federation of Cluniac Places.In 2009 the town celebrated the IX Centenary of the death of the monarch Alfonso VI, which is why they took out various commemorative activities in the form of congresses and publications.

In 2015, in the approval by Unesco of the extension of the Camino de Santiago in Spain to “Roads of Santiago de Compostela: French Road and Northern Roads of Spain”, Spain sent as documentation a “Retrospective Inventory – Associated Elements »(Retrospective Inventory – Associated Components) in which in No. 1441 Sahagún figure with in scope of associated elements.
