Ruth Barbara Grasemann , Baroness Rendell de Babergh, DBE (London, England, February 17, 1930 – ibid., May 2, 2015), was a British writer.

Rendell also wrote under the pseudonym of Barbara Vine . She was one of the most prolific writers of British mystery literature. In addition to the large number of novels and stories published, his production stands out for the great literary quality of his works that won awards such as the Silver Dagger of the Crime Writers Association in 1987, the Gold Dagger four times (1976, 1986, 1987 and 1991), the Diamond Dagger for its contributions to the genre, the National Book Award in 1980, three Edgar Allan Poe awards and the literary prize of the Sunday Times in 1990.

His first published novel was From Doon with Death in 1967 in which he appears for the first time one of his most popular characters, Inspector Wexford. Rendell has 20 published novels of what is known as the “Wexford novels”, all set in the English town of Kingsmarkham, the last of them End in Tears (2006). Apart from the Wexford series, he wrote more than 30 black novels and numerous mystery tales.

It is characteristic of his literary technique the use of intertext, using unquestionable classics of English and universal literature to create, from them, new arguments, for example, in Meat tremula (1986) uses elements of Crime and punishment of Dostoyevski; The House of the Stairs (1988) has as one of its main plot lines the intrigue of The Wings of the Pigeon by Henry James and also uses fragments of The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald, “Mariana in the South” by Tennyson and from Safo; another example would be the novel No More Dying Then, by Inspector Wexford, which is based on Shakespeare’s 146 sonnet.

Some of his works have been taken to the small screen by the BBC.
