Russell Crowe’s Biography

Beginnings

Cousin of two former captains of the New Zealand cricket team Martin Crowe and Jeff Crowe, was born in Wellington (New Zealand), although he has Welsh, Norwegian and Maori descent. At the age of four he moved to Australia, where his parents worked as catering providers for filming and he studied at Sydney Boys High School for ten years. In 1978, the Crowe family returned to New Zealand, where Russell did not finish high school in order to financially help his family.

He returned to Australia seven years later and tried to be admitted to the National Institute of Dramatic Art. “He was acting in a theatrical show, andspoke with a guy who was then the head of technical support at NIDA,” Crowe recalls. “I asked him what he thought about me spending three years in the NIDA. He told me it would be a waste of time. He said: “You already do the things that are supposed to teach you there, and you’ve been doing them for most of your life, so there’s nothing they can teach you except bad habits.” In 1987 Crowe spent six months working as a street actor when he did not find another job.
