Rudolf “Rudy” Ising (Kansas City, August 7, 1903 – Newport Beach, July 18, 1992) was an American animator, producer and director known for founding animation studios Warner Bros. Cartoons, Inc. and MGM Cartoon Studio with his partner Hugh Harman.

Rudolf Ising’s Biography

He was born in Kansas City, Missouri. In 1921 he obtained his first job in the film industry, in the Walt Disney studio in Kansas City. There he helped create Newman Laugh-O-Grams, a series of animated short films that satirized current affairs. The hiring of Ising coincided with a change of direction in the theme of the short films, this time based on popular fairy tales and stories for children. While working there he met Hugh Harman, with whom he joined after Disney moved to California to found another study. Harman and Ising created Arabian Nights Studiow, a company that aimed to produce a series of animated short films titled Arabiann Nights, but without success.

In 1925 he returned with Harman to the Disney studio, this time in Los Angeles. There he worked on the beings Alice Comedies and Oswald the Lucky Rabbit. After three years of work in the studio, Ising was fired, because the producer Charles Mintz – who had fired Disney in 1927 – decided to produce the short films with other animators. In 1929, Ising founded a new animation studio together to Harman, in which they produced the short film Bosko the Talk Ink Kid. The short film caught the attention of producer Leon Schlesinger, who convinced Warner Bros. to buy the series. The following year they created a new short film, Sinkin ‘in the Bathtub, also starring Bosko; the tape was the debut of the series Looney Tunes, that with time acquired a great popularity. However, Ising abandoned that project to focus on another Warner Bros. series, Merrie Melodies, and Ising directed It’s Got Me Again! (1932), who won an Oscar nomination for Best Animated Short Film; the winning short was Walt Disney Trees and Flowers.

Ising and Harman’s relationship with Warner Bros. lasted until 1933, due to the demands of the pair for larger budgets for the short films. After a brief passage through Van Beuren Studios, Harman and Ising signed a contract with MGM, being their first Happy Harmonies series. In 1939 he created the character Barney Bear, which debuted with a short film entitled The Bear Who Could not Sleep.Rudolf Ising directed The Milky Way (1940), which won an Oscar in the category of best animated short film, the first short film This year, Puss Gets the Boot, the first short film by Tom and Jerry, was produced by Ising and Fred Quimby, and in 1941 his partner Hugh Harman left MGM to found his own. I study, while Ising stayed to continue working on short films, mainly from Barney Bear. Ising left the studio in 1942 to join the United States Army Air Corps, where he worked with the film unit making training tapes.

Ising died on July 18, 1992 in Newport Beach, California, at 88 years of age. He had moved to that city after retiring from the film industry in the 1970s.
