Rubin «Hurricane» Carter (Paterson, New Jersey, United States, May 6, 1937 – Toronto, Canada, April 20, 2014) was an American boxer. He fought as a middleweight boxer from 1961 to 1966. In 1966 he was arrested for a triple homicide at the Lafayette Bar and Grill in his hometown. He and another man, John Artis, were tried and convicted in separate trials (1967 and 1976) for these murders, but after the conviction was overturned in 1985, prosecutors decided not to try the case for the third time.
Carter’s autobiography, entitled The Sixteenth Round, was published in 1975 by Warner Books. The story inspired Bob Dylan’s 1975 song “Hurricane” and the 1999 film The Hurricane (with Denzel Washington playing Carter). From 1993 to 2005, Carter was the Executive Director of the AIDWYC (Association in Defense of the Wrongly Convicted).

Carter, fourth of seven siblings, grew up in Paterson, New Jersey. Just turned fourteen years old was charged for assault and robbery and sent to the reformatory. Carter said he defended with a Boy Scout knife a friend who tried to abuse a pedophile. He escaped from the reformatory in 1954 and enlisted in the army. A few months after finishing his basic training in infantry, he was sent to West Germany. In May 1956 he retired from the army after serving 21 months of his three-year enlistment contract and returned to his hometown with the intention of becoming a professional boxer.
Just one month after his departure from the army, Carter was arrested for his escape from the reformatory and sentenced to 9 months in prison, of which he served five in Annandale prison. After being released, he committed several assaults, including robbing a black woman, pleading guilty and being re-incarcerated until September 1961 in East Jersey’s maximum state security prison.
