Roy Z’s Biography

A regular in the Hard Rock scene of Southern California in the ’80s, Roy was in several bands, including Driver, Warrior, Gypsy Moreno, Royal Flush, or Mike Vescera. In 1991 he formed Tribe Of Gypsies.

When Bruce Dickinson left Iron Maiden in 1993, he reunited with Roy and Tribe Of Gypsies members Dave Ingraham (drums) and Eddie Casillas (bass) to complete his solo band. Adding a Latin touch to the characteristic voice of the metal legend, the resulting album, Balls to Picasso is an eclectic mix that ranges from the ballad “Tears of the Dragon” to the rock or doom “Cyclops”. Roy immediately entered the studio with Tribe Of Gypsies to record his self-titled debut, which appeared in 1996 with JVC Records in Japan.

Bruce recorded his alternative album Skunkworks in 1996, but soon after he returned to his roots more Heavy metal and cooperated again with Roy in 1997 to create “Accident of Birth”. With the help of guitarist and songwriter Adrian Smith, the album was a resounding success, winning the year album polls in the metal press and making many fans consider the album Dickinson’s best. Roy earned praise from the industry for producing Dickinson’s albums, and in 2000 he was called to produce Rob Halford’s solo album, “Resurrection,” whose successful and pristine production led him to produce other works of rock / metal bands like Helloween or Rob Rock.

Roy and Bruce formed a team again in 2003 to compose and record Tyranny of Souls, released on Sanctuary Records. They had a hard time finding time to write the album, so Roy sent ideas to Bruce (who was on tour with Iron Maiden) and he wrote the melodies and lyrics. The record was recorded in Roy’s studio and featured session musicians for drums and bass, although Roy himself recorded bass in two songs – “Believil” and “Power Of The Sun”. The vocals of the album were ready in less than two weeks, with Bruce sleeping on a cot in the studio to make the most of the time.

Dickinson was injured by falling during an Iron Maiden show, so the album was archived for more than eight months. However, in 2004 Roy received the call to produce and mix the Judas Priest reunion album, “Angel Of Retribution”.

Roy is a hard-working producer of hard rock / metal, working with some of the most important events of the genre. [citation & nbsp; required]
