Resides in Lake Jackson, city of the same state. He was part of the Foreign Affairs Committee, the Joint Economic Committee, the Financial Services Committee, and was chairman of the Subcommittee on Internal Monetary Policy, where he has been a critic of current US foreign and monetary policies, advocating for the audit and dissolution of the Federal Reserve.

Paul graduated from Gettysburg College and Duke University, where he earned his medical degree. He served as a flight surgeon in the United States Air Force from 1963 to 1968, during the Vietnam War. He worked as an obstetrician and gynecologist in the sixties and seventies, attending more than 4,000 births, before entering politics in 1976.

He is the founder of the Campaign for Liberty lobby and his ideas have been expressed in numerous published articles and books, including Liberty Defined: 50 Essential Issues That Affect Our Freedom (2011), End the Fed (2009), The Revolution : A Manifesto (2008), Pillars of Prosperity (2008), A Foreign Policy of Freedom: Peace, Commerce, and Honest Friendship (2007), and The Case for Gold (1982). According to Keith Poole, a political scientist at the University of Georgia, Paul has more conservative voter registration than any other member of Congress since 1937. His son Rand Paul was elected to the United States Senate by Kentucky in 2011, being the first time that a father and a son coincide in the congress.

He has been called the Tea Party’s “intellectual godfather.” He has gained notoriety for his libertarian positions on many political issues, often clashing with the leaders of the Republican and Democratic parties. Paul has nominated three times for the Presidency of the United States, first in 1988 as a candidate of the Libertarian Party and again in 2008 and 2012 as a Republican. In December 2010, Ron Paul, a supporter of eliminating the central bank, was named chairman of the committee that controls the Federal Reserve In May 2011, Paul officially announced that he would run for president once again as a candidate of the Republican Party in the year 2012. On July 13, 2011 he announced that he will not seek re-election to the congress in 2012 to concentrate on his campaign for the presidency.
