Blair’s father was a Marine of the Armed Forces of the United States, so his family changed residence every so often, establishing both the United States and Japan and Hong Kong. As a teenager in Japan, Ron participated in several rock bands. Once in Gainesville (Florida), Blair became a member of RGF. His sister, Janice Blair, is also a singer and was married to Gregg Allman, whom he married in 1973 and divorced in 1975.
Blair eventually moved to Los Angeles, where he began playing with Gainesville musicians such as Mike Campbell, Benmont Tench and Stan Lynch. Campbell and Tench, with Tom Petty, had been members of Mudcrutch group, which disbanded once the members were in Los Angeles.
After the break, Tench recruited Campbell, Blair and Lynch to record demos in hopes of getting a new record deal. After observing them in a session, Petty asked them if they wanted to form a new group and work under their contract on Shelter Records. Blair played with the group on his first four albums, Tom Petty & amp; the Heartbreakers, You’re Gonna Get It !, damn the torpedoes and Hard Promises, although it was often replaced with session musicians like Donald “Duck” Dunn.
He returned to meet with The Heartbreakers on March 18, 2002 to play at the group’s entrance ceremony in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. The meeting allowed Blair to return to the group for the 2002 summer tour helped finalize the album The Last DJ and has since been present in all recording and touring group.
In addition to her work with The Heartbreakers, Blair has designed albums for Barbara Morrison and Carlos Zialcita. He has also played in Kirstin Candy, Stevie Nicks, Del Shannon, Slobberbone and The Tremblers. Blair was also part of the first lineup of The Dirty Knobs, a side project by Mike Campbell.
