Romy Schneider (Vienna, September 23, 1938 – Paris, May 29, 1982) was an actress born in Austria, of German and French nationality. He made an outstanding artistic career. She played the role of Empress Elizabeth of Bavaria in the trilogy Sissi, Sissi Empress and Sissi’s Destiny, and received the César Award for Best Actress twice, for her performances in the films Lo importante es amar (1976) and A Simple Story (A life of a woman, 1978).
Romy Schneider was born during the occupation of Nazi Germany in Austria. He also had French citizenship. Her parents were the actors Wolf Albach-Retty and Magda Schneider, who worked with her in some films. Because of her place of birth and paternal descent, she could also be considered Austrian, but she never applied for Austrian citizenship and maintained the German nationality of her mother, Magda Schneider.
His first film is made at 15 years old with his mother in white Lilas, also sings the theme song of the film. After that movie he takes his mother’s last name and changes his name to Romy Schneider.
The films that follow are of a romantic nature for which she became famous throughout Europe: The young years of a queen, The baker and the emperor, Christine, Sissi, Empress Sissi and The fate of Sissi, the majority set in imperial Vienna.

With this last one he shot Ludwig-Ludwig II of Bavaria (film) – in 1972, in which he returns to play the Empress Sissi.
On July 5, 1981, his eldest son, David, dies tragically at the age of 14: climbing the bars of his house, slips and is traversed by one of them that pierces the femoral artery. The actress would never recover from this blow.
The following year he finishes filming his latest film – Testimonio de mujer. Romy asks that at the end of the film appear the dedication: “For David and his father.”

Romy Schneider, desolate and lonely, tries to drown his sorrow in alcohol. On May 29, 1982 – at 43 years old – she is found dead in her apartment in Paris. Since no autopsy was performed, it was never known if he died of a heart attack caused by stress – known as takotsubo cardiomyopathy, “heartbroken heart syndrome” – or a suicide with a mixture of alcohol and barbiturates. She is buried – together with her son David – in the cemetery of Boissy-sans-Avoir (Yvelines, France), 50 km from Paris.
In 1990 the Austrian newspaper Kurier created the Romy TV Award in honor of the actress.
In 2003 she was voted 78th of the 100 greatest German-speaking characters in history on the television show Unsere Besten, being the second actress chosen after Marlene Dietrich, who was ranked 50.
