Rod Blagojevich’s Biography

Born as Milorad Blagojević (in Serbian Cyrillic alphabet: Милорад Благојевић), “Rod” (as he is best known), grew up in the northwest part of Chicago as the second of two brothers. His father, Radisav, was a steel worker who immigrated from the city of Kragujevac, Serbia (then Yugoslavia). His mother, Mila Govedarica, was a Serb native of Gacko, Bosnia Herzegovina (then part of Yugoslavia), whose parents immigrated to the United States in 1947. Rod Blagojevich spent much of his childhood working to cope with the debts of the family. He was a shoeshine boy and pizza delivery man before working in a meat processing plant. In order to pay for college expenses, Blagojevich worked as a dishwasher for the construction company of the Trans-Alaska oil pipeline.

Blagojevich is married to Patricia Mell, daughter of former Chicago Councilman Richard Mell. The couple has two daughters, Amy and Anne. Anne was born a few months after her father was sworn in as governor. Her sister-in-law is Deb Mell, a well-known LGBT rights activist who in 2008 was presented by the Democratic party to the Illinois House of Representatives election. Blagojevich has no middle name, but uses the initial “R” in honor of his late father.

Blagojevich was the first Democrat politician since Daniel Walker to be elected governor of Illinois, after 30 years of Republican rule. He had to face tough political opposition to push through budgets and some laws, even facing members of his own party (who are a majority in the Illinois General Assembly), has been the subject of various federal investigations, and his index of approval has always been low, becoming qualified as the “most unpopular American Governor” by Rasmussen Reports, an influential survey and polling firm.

On December 9, 2008, Blagojevich was arrested by FBI agents with John Harris, chief of his cabinet, accused of bribery and fraud in trying to sell political charges pending his appointment. These charges would include the Illinois senator that Barack Obama vacated, and the Illinois Senate dismissed Blagojevich as a result of the political scandal on January 28, 2009. In 2010, he was indicted in federal court in Chicago for corruption and corruption. attempt of extortion and blackmail. He was found guilty of only one charge, lying to the FBI, because the jury could not agree on the other 23 charges. The federal prosecutors obtained the celebration of a second trial on these charges that had not reached a verdict, although they were eventually reduced to twenty. On June 27, 2011, after ten days of deliberations, the jury of the second trial issued a guilty verdict for seventeen of the twenty charges, most of them related to the attempt to sell the Senate seat vacated by the President Obama and the most serious of which can lead to Blagojevich a prison sentence of up to twenty years.
