María de los Ángeles de las Heras Ortiz , known as Rocío Dúrcal (Madrid, October 4, 1944-Torrelodones, March 25, 2006), was a Spanish singer and actress.
Considered the “ranchera queen,” she is one of the most sales-speaking Spanish-speaking women in the industry, and in 2005, a year before her death, she received the Latin Grammy for musical excellence.
Childhood and youth
He was born in Madrid, Spain, on October 4, 1944 in the neighborhood Cuatro Caminos. There he would spend the first years of his life. His parents were Tomás de las Heras and María Ortiz. They claimed that their daughter was a very quiet girl, but that she always liked to get away with it. Otherwise, she was able to set up riots to report that she was not satisfied with what they were doing to her.
After Jacinto, Rocío would have four more brothers: Carlos, María Antonia (Cuca), Arturo and Susana. The paternal grandfather worked as a janitor at the La Paloma Trade Union Institution, where the family lived for a time. Later he moved to Valencia, near Nazareth.
A small school run by Catholic nuns was registered in the Sacred Heart of Jesus School (Chamartín de la Rosa).
He began his artistic career participating in various singing festivals and radio competitions, supported by his paternal grandfather. At 15 years of age (1959), with the approval of his parents, he participated in the television space, now disappeared, First applause issued by the public entity Televisión Española. The theme he chose was the traditional song La sombra vendo. Near the television station, Luis Sanz, a talent scout from Madrid, who watched the program, was impressed by his talent and personality. So much so, that Sanz got in touch with the realization of the program to ask for the name and address of the young contestant. The conversation between Luis Sanz, who was already a representative of several famous Spanish artists, and his parents, was decisive in his future.
After a week, Maria de Los Angeles parents gave their approval to the employer. Sanz decided that the girl would be put in the care of private tutors to finish her high school studies and start singing, dancing and acting. At the same time that she reveals the secrets of the artistic profession, Sanz puts her in contact at various social events with the famous artists of her time. Later, she became very close to her contemporary, Rocío Jurado and Raphael whom she knew, since at that time they lived in the same neighborhood and sometimes they coincided in radio contests.
Because her name was not suitable for throwing her to stardom, Sanz thought of calling her Rocío. In a televised interview, Rocío said that her nickname was given to her by her grandfather because it reminded her of the morning dew. Thus, Sanz must have picked up the nickname of that family custom. But, thinking that he would need a “surname”, he and the young woman looked for a map of Spain in which she randomly pointed out the town of Dúrcal, in the province of Granada. The nickname with which he made his way to posterity was born. Later, she was declared an Adoptive Daughter of this population and was baptized a street in her honor.
Its beginning in the cinema, after some photogenic tests, was given with the film Song of youth of the director Luis Lucia Mingarro, whose story, written with her in mind, portrayed a teenager with her same personality. The film won box office and critical acclaim. [Citation required] This success was repeated in the Spanish-speaking countries where the film was shown. [Citation required] Sanz, following this success, obtained permission to intern Dúrcal in a school where he would improve his manners and study subjects that would serve to expand his culture. Immediately, Dúrcal becomes the protagonist of Rocío de la Mancha tape that also obtains the favor of the public. As a result of this, the young performer obtains her first record contract with the transnational Phonogram (now Universal Music). The songs that the artist interpreted in both tapes served to realize their first titled album the films of Rocío Dúrcal (1962). This first album was the beginning of his successful record career. In these circumstances, he traveled for the first time to Mexico, Venezuela, Puerto Rico and the United States where he participated in the Ed Sullivan Show. [Citation required]
In her third film I am 17 years old (1964), Rocío Dúrcal puts aside her role as “child prodigy”. In this year he made his first play entitled A Sunday in New York. In 1966, according to this maturity, Dúrcal shares the spotlight with the then young actor and Mexican singer Enrique Guzmán in the movie Acompáñame. It has been the custom to edit an album for each movie that stars and in this album begins to perform duets with different singers, which in this case were Jaime Morey and Amalia de Isaura. When it takes part in Love in the air (1967) shares roles with the young Argentine singer and composer Palito Ortega. But it will not be until the following year, when Cristina Guzmán filmed, which is the first of her films intended for audiences over 18 years old.
