Robert Charles Gallo (Waterbury, Connecticut, March 23, 1937) is a biomedical researcher of American origin best known for his role in identifying the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) as the responsible agent of the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS), although his contribution arouses controversy because it was discovered earlier by him or by Luc Montagnier.

Gallo is the director of the Human Virology Institute of the medical school at the University of Maryland in Baltimore (USA). Together with two collaborators, Robert R. Redfield and William A. Blattner, he founded this institute in 1996.

In 2005, he co-founded the company Profectus BioSciences, Inc., which develops and markets technologies that reduce morbidity and mortality caused by human viral diseases, including HIV. The company is located in Baltimore and Gallo is the chairman of the Scientific Committee.

Robert Gallo was born in Waterbury, Connecticut to a family of working-class Italian immigrants. He obtained a degree in Biology in 1959 from the University of Providence and later obtained a doctorate in medicine from Jefferson Medical College of Philadelphia (Pennsylvania) in 1963.

After completing his medical training and internship at the University of Chicago, he becomes part of the staff of researchers of the National Cancer Institute. The choice of this specialty, according to Gallo, comes from the early death of his sister by leukemia, a disease to which he dedicated much of his initial research.
