Robert Fordyce Aickman (June 27, 1914 – February 26, 1981), an English writer of fiction and nonfiction, best known for his short stories of the supernatural genre, which he described as “Strange stories” (“strange stories”).

Robert Aickman was the grandson of the prolific Victorian novelist Richard Marsh (1857-1915), known for his mysterious novel The Beetle (1897), a book that in his time was equated in popularity with the Dracula of Bram Stoker.

He studied architecture, like his father, William Arthur Aickman. In the opening lines of his autobiographical book The Attempted Rescue, Aickman describes his father as “the most extravagant man I have ever met”.

In addition to his literary work, Aickman developed an important role as an environmentalist, a founding member of the Inland Waterways Association, a group dedicated to protecting the waters of the inner channels of England from pollution.

Interested in theater, ballet and music, Aickman made an interesting critical work in these fields. He also held positions at the London Opera Society and other organizations.

Today the first short story books he wrote reached a high price in used markets.

Some of Aickman’s best short stories (Ringing the Changes, The Swords, The Same Dog, The Cicerones …) have been adapted for British television.

Between 1941 and 1957, the writer was married to Edith Ray Gregorson.

Aickman died of cancer on February 26, 1981.
