Robbie Merrill (born June 13, 1963 in Lawrence, Massachusetts) is an American bassist, known for playing in the heavy metal band Godsmack.
He was one of the founding members of Godsmack, meeting the leader of the band Sully Erna through his sister and finally becoming a roommate and friend. In February 1995, Erna decided to form a band as a vocalist after having played the drums for more than 23 years. The new band, called The Scam, was formed with Erna as vocalist, Robbie Merrill as bassist, Lee Richards as guitarist and Tommy Stewart as drummer. The Scam would soon be renamed Godsmack, after recording the first demo.
Merrill is also a founding member of the band Another Animal with Shannon Larkin, Tony Rombola, Lee Richards and Whitfield Crane. Except for Whit Crane, all have been members of Godsmack at some point.
Merrill appears in the IMV DVD series “Behind The Player”, in which she shows her life behind the scenes, as well as giving lessons on how to play the songs of Godsmack “Speak” and “Voodoo” with Shannon Larkin .
Robbie Merrill’s Biography
Merrill was born in Lawrence, Massachusetts and started playing bass at the age of 14. Before starting to play at Godsmack, Merrill was a carpenter, as was Tony Rombola.
Despite being left-handed (as well as occupying such a posture to play the bass), he currently writes as a right-hander, due to a birth defect that does not allow him to move the middle finger of his left hand.
