Rick_Allen’s Biography

Childhood and youth

Allen started playing drums with his mother’s kitchen utensils at the age of 5, using a tambourine as an additional instrument. At 10, he managed to persuade his parents to buy him a battery, agreeing to take classes and pay half the cost of the instrument. He got a bright blue Del-Ray drums and after 6 months of lessons, he started playing with his first band, Smokey Blue. Then, he played with other bands like Rampant and Johnny Kalendar Band.

Def Leppard

When Allen was 15 years old, his mother answered him for an announcement from a band called Def Leppard looking for a drummer to replace Frank Noon (Rick did not want to answer because he was ready to give up the drums). The headline of the ad read “Leppard loses skin” -The Leopard loses its skin. Allen joined the band on November 28, 1978.

In 1979 he left school (other members of the band quit their jobs almost at the same time) to concentrate on his musical career. In September of the same year, they open for Sammy Hagar at the London’s Hammersmith Odeon and in October and November they played as an opening act for AC / DC; Allen celebrated his sixteenth birthday with a performance at the Hammersmith Odeon.

On March 14, 1980, the band releases their first album, On Through the Night. This was followed by High ‘N’ Dry in 1981 and Pyromania in 1983. This last album made them superstars.

Accident and recovery:

On December 31, 1984, while driving near Sheffield, England, his Corvette went off the road, jumped over a stone wall and fell into a nearby field, causing Allen to get fired from the vehicle and lose his left arm. . The doctors managed to replace the arm, but due to a strong infection it had to be amputated again. Rick confirmed that he was not under the influence of alcohol but that his accident was reckless, as an Alfa Romeo went through one of its sides and slowed down and while Rick tried to pass it on the one hand the driver of the Alfa did not leave it, here it was where he committed his imprudence by passing it on one side at great speed and not seeing the curve coming.

Former Status Quo drummer Jeff Rich was a source of help and inspiration during Allen’s convalescence, and after several hours of discussion they decided to develop an electronic kit for Rick, with which he could play using only one arm (the battery Ludwig acoustic he used in High ‘n’ Dry and Pyromania was given away by the Def Leppard team). Working in tandem with Allen, electronic drum maker Simmons created a special drum kit, and Allen made his post-crash debut in 1986 with a good reception from the public at the “Monsters of Rock” Festival at Donington Castle. In August 1987 the band released their fourth album, Hysteria, which after a relatively slow start in the United States, finally became another huge success, selling over 15 million copies. From then until today, he has released 8 albums with the band, being the last studio album Def Leppard, in 2015.
