Richard Jenkins (May 4, 1947) is an American actor.
Richard Dale Jenkins was born and raised in DeKalb, an agricultural town in Illinois. His mother, Mary Elizabeth Jenkins (née Wheeler), was a housewife, and his father, Dale Stevens Jenkins, was a dentist.
Before becoming an actor, he worked in a transportation company (his boss being the father of actor John C. Reilly).
He studied at Wesleyan University and did a theater program at Indiana State College; there he was trained under the teachings of Harold Guskin, an important influence in his career.
Jenkins says that seeing Michael Caine in Alfie was the impulse he needed to decide to be an actor. And he would display his acting talent on theatrical stages for fifteen years (four of them as artistic director) at the Trinity Repertory Company in Rhode Island, in indisputable works such as Waiting for Godot, Macbeth, American Buffalo, Mice and Men.
As far as the screen is concerned, the actor started in the small one in 1974, in telefilms of little interest. And although the papers they gave him were minimal, he must have had something for Lawrence Kasdan to sign for Silverado (1985), Woody Allen for Hannah and his sisters (1986), and George Miller for The Witches of Eastwick (1987). < / p>
It was in the 80s when he began to participate assiduously in movies, with films like The Manhattan Project, Spies without identity and Melody of seduction, in addition to that he appeared in a couple of episodes of the Miami Vice series. But besides being a sufferer, he had the face of a comedian, or he fit in both. This was understood by the Farrelly brothers (Peter and Bobby), who recruited him for titles like Something Happens with Mary and Me, myself and Irene, and other brothers, the Coens, with whom he has made The man who was never there, Intolerable Cruelty and Burn After Reading. Other comedies that include his presence include Te can happen to you, Flirting with Disaster, Twelve at home and Brothers by balls.
Among his most recent works include dramas (In the land of men), and even science fiction (The core). And in his resume he has collaborations with Sydney Pollack (Random Hearts), David O. Russell (Strange coincidences) and Rob Reiner (Rumor Has It …).
But the role that would bring him true fame was that of Professor Walter Vale in the Thomas McCarthy film; The Visitor (2007), which deals with a lonely middle-aged man whose life changes when faced with problems of social identity, immigration and intercultural communication, after the attacks of September 11 in New York. For this role he received his first Oscar nomination for best actor in 2008, in addition to the unanimous applause of the critics.
Among other projects, on television: highlights his role as Nathaniel Fisher Sr., the deceased patriarch of the HBO series Six Feet Under (2001-2005), and in the theater: he is a member of the theater company Trinity Repertory Company, of Rhode Island, for 14 years, and has been artistic director of the same for 4 years.
As for his personal life, since 1969 he is married to Sharon R. Friedrick, with whom he has two children, Sarah Pamela and Andrew Kenneth. Currently lives in Rhode Island.
