Richard spent much of his childhood-adolescence in Battle, where he met Tim when he was about 2 years old. But it was when he was 10 when they became really friends, after Tim gave Richard some punches after school, in a childish fight. At the age of 13 he became a vegetarian due to the great sensitivity and compassion that the animals produced. At the age of 17 he learned to play drums. Richard Hughes attended the Tonbridge School, with Tim Rice-Oxley where he also met Dominic Scott. When Scott and Rice-Oxley formed a small band that played versions of other artists in 1995, he was invited to participate as a drummer. Later he invited vocalist Tom Chaplin to join the group. Although initially opposed by Hughes, he later commented: “The idea of ​​giving someone who was already the loudest person who knew a microphone was not something that particularly interested me.”

Hughes went to university at University College London, where he received a degree in Geography. He accepted a job as secretary on the BBC in order to support himself and the band while they lived and practiced in an apartment on Upper Clapton Road in London. He also had a job as a supply teacher for a short time. He is a follower of Leicester City F.C. and he got married in 2010, presumably with his long-time girlfriend.
