Richard Griffiths , OBE (Stockton-on-Tees, Yorkshire, July 31, 1947 – Coventry, March 28, 2013) was a British actor, especially known for his appearance in the saga of Harry Potter films, in which he played Vernon Dursley.
Son of deaf parents, he learned sign language at an early age to be able to communicate with them. He also developed a special ear for dialects, which would later allow him to get papers from different ethnic groups.Her childhood, he had several times the idea of running away from home. He even abandoned his studies at the Our Lady & amp; St. Bede School at 15 years old, and went to work as a trunk, but his father finally convinced him to return to school. [Appointment required]
He decided, then, to start taking acting classes at the Stockton & amp; Billingham College, and continued training at the Manchester Polytechnic School of Drama.
He debuted before the cameras in 1974, when he participated in an episode of the Crown Court series. Since then he has participated in films such as Superman II (1980), Chariots of Fire (1981), Gandhi (1982), Greystoke: the legend of Tarzan (1984), Sleepy Hollow (1999) or the saga of Harry Potter, where he played to Vernon Dursley.
A regular theater actor, he highlights his roles in the British company Royal Shakespeare Company, with works such as The White Guard, Eleven in a Lifetime, Henry VIII, Volpone and Red Star. His greatest success was the work of Alan Bennett, The History Boys, directed by Nicholas Hynter, who performed at the Royal National Theater in 2004. Griffiths repeated his role later on national and international tours of this play, as well as on Broadway, where he won the Tony Award. paper in its cinematographic version, released in 2006 and also directed by Hynter.
In 2007, after his stint in the work Heroes: Le Vent Des Peupliers, he worked with Daniel Radcliffe, Griffiths companion in Harry Potter, in the reproduction of Peter Shaffer’s work Equus; It premiered in February of that year at the Gielgud Theater, enjoying great success and having to extend its functions for two more weeks. Then, at the end of 2007 it was announced that the work would be taken to Broadway in 2008. In September of that year, the work in New York was premiered at the Broadhurst Theater, which was on line until February 2009.
In 2012 he climbed for the last time to a stage, which he shared with Danny DeVito in the play The Sunshine Boys, by Neil Simon.
Griffiths was honored with the OBE (Official) of the Order of the British Empire, granted by Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom.
