Richard Dreyfuss (New York, United States, October 29, 1947) is an American actor.
He was born in New York City, the son of a lawyer. The first years of his life were spent in New York, until, at the age of nine, he moved with his family to Los Angeles.
Dreyfuss’s acting career began as soon as he arrived in Los Angeles. He participated in plays at the Jewish center of Beverly Hills. At 15 years of age he was selected to act on television. He enrolled in college, but the following year he was called up to go to Vietnam. He declared himself a conscientious objector and performed an alternative service as an assistant in a hospital. At the same time he intervened in small roles of television series. During the following years he performed in several theaters in New York, both on Broadway and in other theaters.
The first participation of Dreyfuss in a film was very short, in The Graduate, in which he had to say a single sentence. Shortly after it took part in Dillinger and, mainly, in American Graffiti (1973), film that had a considerable success, and in which Harrison Ford also participated.
His first leading role was played by Dreyfuss in a Canadian film, and after that he was hired by Steven Spielberg for Tiburón, a film with which Dreyfuss made himself known to large audiences. Two years later Spielberg counted on him again for Close Encounters of the Third Kind (in Spanish, encounters in the third phase “or” Close Encounters of the Third Kind “), which had a success comparable to the previous one. Dreyfuss’s career followed an upward trajectory, and in 1977 he played The Goodbye Girl, for which he won an Oscar as best supporting actor, and was the youngest actor to receive this award in Oscar history.
During the following years, Dreyfuss took part in several films, but none of them had a significant success at the box office. This possibly contributed to his taking drugs in increasing doses, until he suffered a car accident. As a result, he entered a detoxification center and managed to get rid of the drugs. He then returned to the cinema and acted in several films, in which he showed that he was still the same great actor. Since then he has been appearing on a regular basis not only in the cinema, but also in television and theater, and is considered one of the most solid and appreciated actors of the current time.
In 1995 he was nominated for an Oscar for Best Actor and Golden Globe: Best Actor for his performance in Mr. Holland’s Opus (Triumph to Life). The film was written by Patrick Sheane Duncan (for which he received the Golden Globe Award nomination for best screenplay) and directed by Stephen Herek.
Dreyfuss was married for the first time between 1983 and 1995, of whose marriage he has three children. In 1999 he married for the second time.
In February 2014, she took part in the TV show The Late Late Show, presented by Ryan Tubridy, where she began to cry after having met the granddaughter of actor Robert Shaw, his partner in the movie Jaws, who died in 1978 at 51 years of age due to a heart attack.
Since February 2016, he has played the swindler Bernard Madoff in the telefilm Madoff, which is based on the book The Madoff Chronicles.
