Richard Chanfray’s Biography
Richard Chanfray’s magical career began in 1973 at a theater in Paris, where he was touted as “the man who transmutes lead into gold”.
He was born on April 4, 1940 in the French city of Lyon. His childhood was spent on the street and he became a thief. Arrested for assaulting a woman during a robbery and sentenced to six years, he read some old books in prison, and was informed about the Earl of Saint-Germain, a mysterious alchemist, who claimed to be able to transmute lead into gold, creation of magical potions, and the acquisition of immortality. Chanfray adopted that personality, taking advantage of the fondness of French high society for the paranormal, hermeticism and esotericism. He quickly became wealthy and well known for his exploits, for example, making psychic reading and divination to various famous people, as well as through his extravagant claims.
In 1972 he met the singer Dalida, who was at the height of his fame. Her husband, Lucien Morisse, and her lover, Luigi Tenco, had previously committed suicide. When Dalida met Chanfray, she quickly fell in love. He spent a year in prison, in addition to being forced to pay 500,000 francs in restitution, when he shot a man whom he found naked in his kitchen late at night. The man was only superficially wounded, and he turned out to be the maid’s mistress.
The incident marked the beginning of its decline. The couple ran out of money and Chanfray tried to survive through music, painting and sculpture, all without success. Dalida and Chanfray separated, but despite their problems remained part of the high society of Paris and Saint Tropez. He became the mistress of the baroness of “Trintignan”, Paula de Loos, whose title was as false as his. De Loos was, however, apparently a millionaire and when Chanfray became suspicious of the fraudulent activities of Loos’s financial administrator, he threatened him with a rifle. He was again imprisoned and fined and asked Loos for his help. She, however, was also heavily in debt, so she had no capital to help him.
His last appearance in public at a party in Saint Tropez, in June 1983. He was apparently very thin, with white hair and tired looking.
On July 14, 1983, in a village near Saint Tropez, Chanfray and de Loos committed suicide by inhaling the exhaust gases from their car. Nearby there was a suicide note that read: “I leave andbring her with me, because she is so like me”.
