At the age of ten he inherited the title of Earl of Burlington, and with it large tracts of land in Yorkshire and Ireland. He soon showed passion for music, Haendel dedicated three of his composed operas during his stay at Burlingont House between 1713 and 1715. His artistic training was based on three Grand Tours made between 1714 and 1719 and a subsequent trip to Paris in 1726. In In 1719, during his stay in Veneto, he made numerous annotations in his copy of Andrea Palladio’s book “I Quattro Libri dell’Architettura”. In the city of Venice he could see the classical influence in Palladio’s villas.
Burlington never went directly to inspect Roman ruins or make drawings with details of classical buildings and arrived at the classical tradition through the interpretations made by Palladio and Vincenzo Scamozzi. Another great source of knowledge for his work was the large collection of drawings he collected, some of the same Palladio and who had previously belonged to Iñigo Jones and his disciple John Webb.
He designed homes and public buildings in England. His first project was his house in London, he also designed his country house in Chiswick (1725) was the most representative construction of the dominance of Palladian architecture in England. He retired from public life in 1730, but continued to help other architects and the development of neoclassicism in painting and sculpture.
