Richard Basehart (August 31, 1914 – September 17, 1984) was an American actor. He has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
Born in Zanesville, Ohio, USA, on August 31, 1914 as John Richard Basehart, made his film debut in 1947, after going through the theater, with the movie Repeat Perfomance (Return to live) in which he goes crazy final; continuing with his roles of deranged as in his second film, Cry Wolf, plays a suicide in the film Fourteen Hours (Hours of Anguish). He is an actor who travels a lot, especially in Europe, where one of his most notable film roles was that of an acrobat known as “El Loco” in the acclaimed Italian film La Strada, directed by Federico Fellini. It is curious the fact that he participated in a Spanish film directed by the great Berlanga, The Miracle Thursday (shot in 1956), in which he acts as a miracle saint. He also appeared as a murderer in the classic film noir Order: hunting without quarter (He Walked by Night (1948)), where he imposes his characteristic personality, as a member of the Hatfield clan – in which he returns to play the role of psychotic – in Roseanna McCoy (1949), in the drama Decision before dawn (Decission Before Dawn) (1951), Moby Dick (1956), as Ishmael. In 1964 he starred in the TV series Journey to the Bottom of the Sea, in which he played Admiral Nelson, as a result of which he was known worldwide. But since the series was over, he had difficulty finding his place in the world of cinema again: the producers had short memories. The doors of the cinema are closing to Richard, after a career that is more than fruitful, and for five long years nobody will see it on the screen. It is in Europe where he finds his place again: the French Claude Lelouch gives him the opportunity and hires him for the film Un Homme qui me Plaît (A man I like / Del amor y el infidelidad) of 1969. Since then his career seems again driven, dividing between the small and the big screen. Thus, he participates in multiple television series as a guest star and on the other hand plays a disheveled man-animal in the island of Dr. Moreau of 1977. His latest film will be Welcome, Mr. Chance (1979/1980). His last public appearance is to narrate the closing poem of the Olympic Games in Los Angeles on August 12, 1984. The next day he suffers a series of attacks. Richard died on September 17, 1984 at the Cedars-Sinai Medical Center (L.A.) of a cardiac arrest. A commemorative plaque is located in the Urn Garden of Westwood Village Cementery in Beberly Hills (CA), section C row 2B.
