Reginald Aubrey Fessenden (October 6, 1866 – July 22, 1932) was a Canadian inventor. Born in East Bolton, Quebec, Canada, he was well known for his work in the early days of radio, including the use of continuous waves and the early – possibly the first – radio transmission of voice and music. Throughout his career, he received hundreds of patents for devices in fields such as high-power transmission, sonar and television.
At the age of 14, the Bishop’s College School in Lennoxville, Quebec gave him a master’s degree in mathematics.
At the end of 1886, Fessenden began working directly for Thomas Alva Edison at the new laboratory in West Orange, New Jersey. Fessenden quickly made great strides, especially in receiver design. From 1890 to 1900, Fessenden worked in several factories and in 1892 he was professor of electrical engineering at Purdue University, then became head of the department of electrical engineering at the University of Pittsburgh in 1893. In 1900, Fessenden worked for the United States Weather Bureau (United States Meteorological Service) where he developed the heterodyne principle, with which two combined signals produce a third audible tone.
