Arnold Jacob «Red» Auerbach (September 20, 1917-28 October 2006) was a prestigious and influential basketball coach from Washington Capitols, Tri-Cities Blackhawks and Boston Celtics. After his retirement from the bench, he worked as president and executive of the Celtics until his death.

As a coach, he won 938 games (record for his retirement) and nine NBA championships, two fewer than Phil Jackson. As general manager and president of the Celtics, he won seven more titles, for a total of 16 in 29 years, being one of the most successful personalities in the history of professional American sport.

Beyond the titles, Auerbach is remembered as a pioneer of modern basketball, redefining this sport as a sport dominated by team play and good defense rather than individual work, in addition to introducing the counterattack as a powerful offensive weapon He trained many players who would later enter the Basketball Hall of Fame, but, more importantly, Auerbach was vital in the demolition of racial barriers in the NBA. He made history by selecting the first African-American player in the NBA, Chuck Cooper, in 1950, and 14 years later he introduced the first all-black quintet in history.Auerbach made popular his habit of smoking cigars of victory when he thought that the party was decided, a habit that became cult in Boston.

For his achievements, Auerbach received many honors. In 1967, the NBA Coach of the Year, a prize he won in 1965, was named “Red Auerbach Trophy”, and two years later he was included in the Basketball Hall of Fame. In 1981 he was elected Executive of the Year, in addition to being subsequently elected one of the 10 best coaches in the history of the NBA and in 1985 being removed the shirt of the Celtics with the number 2 in his honor.
