Rebecca West (London, December 21, 1892 – ibid., March 15, 1983), the name of the rebel heroine in the work of Ibsen Rosmersholm, was the pseudonym with which The British writer, journalist, critic and feminist Cecily Isabel Fairfield was announced.
Daughter of Isabel (Scottish), pianist, and Charles Fairfield (Irish), journalist and womanizer, who left his family in 1901 to set up a pharmaceutical factory in Sierra Leone and who, alone and ruined, died in Liverpool in 1906. Her family – she was the youngest of three sisters – moved to Edinburgh, where Cicely began her studies, but had to leave in 1907, when she became ill with tuberculosis. From then on, a large part of his education was self-taught.
In September 1912, Rebecca West began an intimate friendship with the writer H. G. Wells (paradoxically, following a corrosive criticism written against him); Both writers became lovers at the end of 1913. From that relationship was born Anthony West, on August 4, 1914. Although their romance lasted only ten years, their friendship lasted until Wells’ death in 1946. In 1930, at 37, Rebecca West married the banker Henry Maxwell Andrews, with whom he remained until his death in 1968, the year she returned to Europe, settling in London.
Delicate health since 1970, died ninety years after a long illness, on March 15, 1983.
