Rebecca Augusta Miller (Roxbury, September 15, 1962) is an American filmmaker, screenwriter, writer and actress, known for films such as Personal Velocity: Three Portraits, The Ballad of Jack and Rose, Angela and The Private Lives of Pippa Lee, all written and performed by her. She is the daughter of the photographer Inge Morath, of the Magnum agency, and of the playwright Arthur Miller, winner of the Pulitzer Prize. Her husband is actor Daniel Day-Lewis, a three-time Oscar winner.
Rebecca Miller was born in Roxbury, Connecticut, and grew up with her father, playwright Arthur Miller and her mother, the Austrian photographer Inge Morath. His father was Jewish and his mother, Protestant, had a brother, Daniel, born in 1966 with down syndrome. For a while, Rebecca Miller practiced Catholicism of her own free will but got bored, and later stopped seeing herself as a Christian militant “at some point, at the end of college.” Miller recalls his childhood in Roxbury surrounded by artists such as the sculptor Alexander Calder, the choreographer Martha Clarke or the members of the Pilobolus experimental group, even Rebecca Miller’s drawings were closely followed by another genius, the sculptor Philip Grausman.
She was educated at the Choate Rosemary Hall and in 1980 she began studies in Art and Literature at Yale University, where she shared a bedroom with Naomi Wolf After graduating in 1985, Miller went on a scholarship to Munich, Germany. In 1987, Miller moved to New York City and held painting and sculpture exhibitions at the Leo Castelli Gallery, the Victoria Munroe Gallery, and Connecticut Miller also studied film at The New School. In 1991, Miller wrote and directed a short film, Florence, starring actress Marcia Gay Harden, about an extremely empathetic woman who acquires the symptoms of other characters.
