Born in Grand Rapids (Michigan), Teal was a saxophonist before becoming an actor, making his way as a band leader while studying at the University of California, Los Angeles.
He played small roles in western genre films for several years before getting a substantial role in Northwest Passage (1940). Another of its outstanding papers was the one of Little John in The Bandit of Sherwood Forest (the son of Robin of the forests) (1946) and, perhaps, the most outstanding of its cinematographic activities was the one of judge in Judgment at Nuremberg (1961) , film interpreted, among other actors, by Spencer Tracy.
In the 1955-1957 season, he starred in three episodes of the television series Crossroads, a production focused on clerics of different religious tendencies, and in 1955 he worked on the episode “Julesburg” of the ABC show Cheyenne, starring Clint Walker. .
However, his most lasting role was that of Sheriff Roy Coffee in the NBC series Bonanza (1960-1972). Previously he had also been sheriff in the film The Great Carnival.
Ray Teal died of natural causes in 1976 in Santa Monica (California). He was 74 years old. He was buried in Holy Cross Cemetery, Culver City, California.
