As a freshman, he quickly exploited his qualities and became the owner of the last five games. He recorded a total of 81 tackles, two sacks, two tackles for loss of yards and four passes defensed, which earned him to be named to the All-American team in first year. \n In his second season as a sophomore, Lewis also played a big role, leading the Big East Conference with 152 tackles and also contributed nine tackles for loss of yards, two sacks and one interception, finishing sixth in the polls of both journalists and of coaches in terms of better defender. \n His junior season was even more successful, as he was again named to the All-American and All-Big East teams, and finished as the Butkus Award runner-up to the best college football linebacker.
