Raquel Torres (Hermosillo, Sonora, Mexico, November 11, 1908 – Los Angeles, California, August 10, 1987) was a Mexican actress, famous in Hollywood in the early years of cinema sound in the thirties.
Paula Marie Osterman was born in Hermosillo, Sonora, Mexico, on November 11, 1908, belonging to a family of German origin. Her sister, Renee Torres, also developed a career as an actress. He began his film career at the age of 19 and gained immediate attention thanks to W. S. Van Dyke’s White Shadows in the South Seas (1928), the first MGM movie to synchronize music, dialogues and sound effects. The film, beautifully filmed, won the Oscar for best photography.
The following year Raquel performed with Lili Damita and Ernest Torrence in The Bridge of San Luis Rey (1929), the first film version of Thornton Wilder’s classic novel. Another film by Raquel that year was The Desert Rider (1929), along with Tim McCoy.
Torres continued to perform in tropical environments in The Sea Bat (1930) and Aloha (1931). Eventually he collaborated with comedians Bert Wheeler and Robert Woolsey in So This Is Africa (1933) and with the Marx Brothers in Goose Soup (1933).
Rachel retired abruptly after her marriage to businessman Stephen Ames in 1935, ex-husband of actress Adrienne Ames. Her husband later produced a series of post-war B movies, but Raquel never returned to the film industry.
Ames died on his 20th wedding anniversary in 1955, and then Raquel married Jon Hall’s actor.
Raquel Torres died of complications from a stroke in early 1987 in Los Angeles at the age of 78.
