Étienne Fiacre Louis Raoul (July 23, 1815 – March 30, 1852) was a French naval surgeon and naturalist.
Born in Brest, son of a captain of La Royale, he studies at the “Brest Medical School”. In 1836 he is appointed 3rd class surgeon. It takes part in the expedition “Commission of exploration to the Africa”, in the ship L’Aube under the command of the Tte. Lavaud. He will be sailing through the Bay of Islands in New Zealand on July 11, 1840, and continues his navigation on board the L’Allier for three more years.
He returns to Paris, and works at the Muséum national d’histoire naturelle (National Museum of Natural History) under the direction of Brongniart (1801-1876) and Decaisne (1807-1882), describing and classifying a significant amount of specimens collected during his stay in N.Zelanda. At the same time, he studied medicine and obtained his doctorate in 1844 with the thesis Des rapports des maladies aigues et chroniques du cœur avec les affections dites rhumatismales (“Relations of acute and chronic heart diseases with rheumatic disorders”).
In 1846 he published Choix de plantes de la Nouvelle-Zélande (“Selection of New Zealand Plants”) with Fertin and D. Masson. After a brief expedition to Africa in 1846, he became professor of Medicine at Brest, in 1849. In 1851 he published Guide hygienique et médical pour les bâtiments de commerce qui fréquentent the Côte Occidentale d’Afrique (“Hygienic and medical guide for merchant ships that visit the West Coast of Africa “).
