Ralph_Fiennes’s Biography
Son of photographer and farmer Mark Fiennes (1933-2004) and writer Jennifer Lash (1938-1993), Ralph is the oldest of a total of six children of marriage. Among them stand out the actor Joseph Fiennes and the director Martha Fiennes, who directed a film based on the novel of the Russian Aleksandr Pushkin in which Ralph himself performed and entitled Onegin. He also had roles in the movie The Hobbid as Guy de Gisborne in the Robin Hood series. In 1973 the Fiennes family moved to Ireland, where they lived in Kilkenny County, while Ralph and his brothers were educated at home by their parents. Then, the family moved to Salisbury, England, where Fiennes finished his education and began attending the Chelsea College of Art. He subsequently attended the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art and joined the Royal Shakespeare Company in 1988. He made his first appearance on the big screen playing Heathcliff in the film Wuthering Heights, based on the homonymous work of Emily Brontë, along with the actress Juliette Binoche.
It was his performance as the Nazi commander Amon Göth in the film Schindler’s List, directed by Steven Spielberg, which led him to the Oscar nomination in the category of supporting actor. He would repeat the Oscar nomination, this time as a leading actor in 1996 for his role in the movie The English Patient, directed by Anthony Minghella.
In 2005 he was hired to play the villain Lord Voldemort in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, role he would repeat in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (2007), Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 1 (2010) ) and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2 (2011). In the movies it is altered by means of special effects, among which the absence of his nose stands out.
Other titles of his filmography are Oscar and Lucinda (1997), Sunshine (1999), Red Dragon (2002), The faithful gardener (2005), The Duchess (2008), The Hurt Locker (2009), Clash of the Titans (2010) and its sequel: Wrath of the Titans (2012), and Skyfall (2012) and Specter (2015), the 23rd and 24th films based on the James Bond missions (Daniel Craig).
In 2011 he shot his first film as a film director: Coriolanus, a film adaptation of William Shakespeare’s Coriolan tragedy. In 2013 he returns to direct another film, The Invisible Woman, biography of Charles Dickens (played by Fiennes himself) who, at the height of his career, meets a young woman who becomes his secret lover until his death.
