Michael Anthony Maida (born February 18, 1970) is a Canadian musician best known for being the lead singer and main songwriter of the alternative rock band Our Lady Peace. He has become known for his unique nasal countertenor falsetto singing voice, as well as his cryptic and poetry-influenced lyrics. From time to time he plays some instruments, like the acoustic guitar, while performing with Our Lady Peace.

Maida began a solo career in 2006, releasing her first solo album The Hunters Lullaby in 2007. He also self-produced seventh studio album by Our Lady Peace, Burn Burn, in 2009. Maida has been married to Canadian singer Chantal Kreviazuk since 1999, and together they have three children. Maida has been intimately involved with War Child and other charities since 2003, and was an outspoken critic of the Iraq war and former US President George W. Bush.

First years

Maida was born Michael Anthony Maida in Weston, Ontario, Canada, in 1970. His parents separated when he was very young. Before pursuing a musical career, Maida studied criminology at the University of Toronto, and before that she attended Ridley College of St. Catharines even though they did not graduate. Around the end of 1991, Maida changed his first name from “Michael” to “Raine”. This was done to avoid confusion over having two Mikes in Our Lady Peace, the other having been ex-member Mike Turner.
