Q-Tip (born Jonathan Davis on April 10, 1970 in New York, United States). He is a rapper, record producer and American actor. He is also the former leader of the hip hop group A Tribe Called Quest. He converted to Islam in the mid-1990s and changed his name to Kamaal Ibn John Fareed . The Q of Q-Tip refers to Queens, the neighborhood where he grew up. He also refers to himself as “The Abstract”.

In addition to working with his popular and successful hip hop group influenced by jazz, Tip also produced (under his production name The Abstract or often as part of The Ummah, a production collective formed by Ali Shaheed Muhammad, a fellow he in Tribe, and the late Jay Dee of Slum Village) to artists like Nas (“One Love”, Illmatic, 1994), Mobb Deep (“Give Up the Goods” (Just Step), The Infamous, 1995) and even to super divas Mariah Carey (“Honey”, “Butterfly” 1997) and Whitney Houston (“Fine”, “Greatest Hits”). In addition, he has appeared countless times as a guest artist on songs by Nas, Mobb Deep, Janet Jackson, Missy Elliott, The Roots, Busta Rhymes, Mos Def, Kanye West, De La Soul, Mark Ronson, Big Daddy Kane, Black Eyed Peas , DJ Shadow, Raphael Saadiq, The Chemical Brothers, REM, Deee-Lite and Beastie Boys.

After A Tribe Called Quest was dissolved in 1998, Q-Tip began its solo career. His first singles (influenced pop), “Vivrant Thing” and “Breathe & Stop”, were far from resembling the work done as a member of Tribe, as his debut album Amplified, under Arista Records. In 2002, his next album was Kamaal the Abstract, and although critically acclaimed, he was never officially released due to a lack of commercial solicitation. In 2006, Q-Tip will launch Live at the Renaissance, which includes the song “For the Nasty” produced by The Neptunes and with the vocal collaboration of Busta Rhymes. This song also appears on the soundtrack of NBA Live 06.

At the beginning of 2004, Q-Tip signed a new recording contract with Motown Records. His most recent collaborations have been with DJ Shadow (“Enuff” from the 2006 album The Outsider, with Lateef the Truthspeaker); R.E.M. (“The Outsiders” from Around The Sun, 2004); and The Chemical Brothers (the single “Galvanize”, from Push the Button, 2005).

She has also appeared in several films such as Prison Song, Poetic Justice and She Hate Me, as well as on television, on Chappelle’s Show.

work on three different occasions with the renowned American jazz guitarist Kurt Rosenwinkel. One as a co-producer on Rosenwinkel’s album Heartcore, also contributing some ideas for the album, and on the other two occasions, Rosenwinkel was the one who recorded at Kamaal the Abstract and Renaissance.
