Polin (August 13, 1863 – June 8, 1927) was an actor and singer of café-concert of French nationality.
His real name was Pierre-Paul Marsalés, and he was born in Paris, France. Polin made his debut in Paris performing in neighborhood halls (Concert de la Pépinière, 1886 & nbsp ;; Concert du Point du Jour) before working in more important venues such as the Éden-Concert or the Alcazar d’été.
After notoriety, he sang at the café-concert) Les Ambassadeurs and then, and for twenty years, at the Scala hall in Paris. He specialized in interpreting comic soldiers, a character with whom Éloi Ouvrard had already excelled. His greatest successes were Le P’tit Objet (by Vincent Scotto), La Caissière du Grand Café, L’Ami Bidasse, Suzon la blanchisseuse and La Petite Tonkinoise (first success by Vincent Scotto). The troupes of troupes of the next generation, among them Bach (Charles-Joseph Pasquier), Raimu or Fernandel, were inspired by him.
As of 1910 Polin also acted in the cinema and the theater, emphasizing his intervention in the theatrical piece Le Grand Duc, by Sacha Guitry, in 1921.
His interpretations were sober and full of nuances and subtleties, something that was in contrast to the tradition of the café-concert genre.
Polin died in La Frette-sur-Seine, France, from heart disease. He was buried in the Père-Lachaise Cemetery. Louis Leplée, cabaret director and discoverer of Édith Piaf, was his nephew.
