Piper Laurie , whose real name is Rosetta Jacobs (Detroit, Michigan, United States, January 22, 1932) is an American actress.
His father was a Polish immigrant who sold furniture. His mother was an American of Russian origin. When he was six years old, the family moved to Los Angeles. Laurie was an attractive girl, with striking reddish hair, but she was very shy. Therefore, her parents sent her to diction classes. Over time he also went to acting classes at a local acting school.
When Laurie was 17 years old, Universal Studios noticed her and signed a contract. With this motive he adopted Piper Laurie as a stage name. In 1950 she was selected for her first film, Louisa, in which she coincided with Ronald Reagan, with whom she established a good friendship. Shortly after he acted in his second film, this time with Tony Curtis, an actor with whom he would later make several more films. Laurie followed other films for Universal. However, the studio pigeonholed her in the role of attractive young, naive, and with little head, and did not offer roles in which he could demonstrate his acting skills. Although with a weekly pay of two thousand dollars Laurie was very well paid, finally she got tired and told her agent that she was leaving her job at Universal, without caring about the consequences.
In 1952 she has just turned 20 when the first Miss Universe contest is held and she is the one who crowns the winner, the Finnish Armi Kuusela. This was chosen for being the beauty icon of that time.
Finally Laurie was able to leave without major problems and moved to New York to restart her acting studies. At the same time he acted in live television programs. In 1957 she received an interesting offer for a film, which took her back to the cinema. His true opportunity arose in 1961, when he played the invalid friend of Paul Newman in the classic The Hustler. She was nominated for an Oscar as best supporting actress. At that time Laurie got married and when she did not receive interesting offers, she retired to her home in Woodstock, near New York, where she worked as a housekeeper and her daughter.
In 1965 Laura was in the New York assembly of The Crystal Zoo of Tennessee Williams, sharing the bill with Maureen Stapleton.
He also began to remember his time on television and was accepting over the next decades an increasing number of roles in movies and mini-television series, to the point that in his career he will have appeared in so many productions for cinema as for television.
In 1976 Laurie accepted a role in the movie Carrie, starring Sissy Spacek. She incarnated the religious and eccentric mother of a shy young woman with psychic problems. For her performance, she received her second Oscar nomination as best supporting actress. Her third nomination was in 1986 for her role as the mother of the young deaf-mute in Children of a Lesser God. The same year he won an Emmy for his performance in the television movie Promise, with James Garner.
Laurie divorced in 1981 and has not remarried. He moved with his daughter to Southern California.
