Pierre Loti Short Bio

Julien Viaud , known as Pierre Loti , (January 14, 1850, Rochefort, Charente Maritime, France – June 10, 1923, Hendaye, Pyrénées-Atlantiques, France) , French writer and officer of the French Navy, author of Impressionist-style novels. Elected member of the Goncourt Academy in 1883, and member of the French Academy in 1891. He was buried on the island of Oleron.

There is an opera based on his semiautobiographical work Madame Chrysanthème (1887), with music by André Messager according to a libretto by Georges Hartmann and Alexandre André. It premiered at the Théâtre de la Renaissance in Paris on January 21, 1893.

Also Lakmé, an opera in three acts with music by Léo Delibes and a French libretto by Edmond Gondinet and Philippe Gille, is based on a work by Loti, the novel Rarahu ou Le Mariage de Loti (Rarahu or The Marriage of Loti ).

Giacomo Puccini’s opera Madama Butterfly, with Italian libretto by Giuseppe Giacosa and Luigi Illica, is based partly on her novel Madame Chrysanthème. Puccini also based his opera partly on the short story Madame Butterfly (1898), by John Luther Long.
